Insect Fossil Sets Age Record
|
Fossil remains of the oldest known land animal found in North
America have been recovered from deposits in Quebec's Gaspe'
Peninsula. The remains date from the early Devonian period, which
began 410 million years ago. It is a primitive wingless insect,
called a bristletail, that resembles today's silverfish.
Fragmentary fossils of insects from the Silurian period, which
immediately preceded the Devonian, are known as the first evidence
for animal life on land anywhere, but none are as complete in all
details as the bristletail ...
