`New Orthodoxy' on Campus Assailed; Conservative Academicians Fault Studies of Pop Culture

Higher education is descending into intellectual chaos, warned a
conference of nearly 300 academics meeting here this weekend.
Dominated by administrators and faculty drawn from the radical
left of the 1960s, academia has begun to treat popular culture as if
it merited the same treatment as Platonic studies, and has replaced
standards of excellence with a kind of curricular affirmative action,
said the scholars, most of whom would identify themselves as academic
conservatives.
