TREES, EVEN those that fall in deserted forests, can be master
story tellers. You just have to know how to listen.
Year after year, trees silently witness and relentlessly record
in their annual growth rings the history of their environment.
Earthquakes, fires, droughts, floods, solar cycles, glaciers,
pollution, changes in atmospheric chemistry-all these leave coded
chronicles in the wood. And now researchers are learning to
translate the arboreal archive into volumes of information about the
recent and ancient past.
