Festivals ban proposed to safeguard showpiece events

NEW festivals should be barred from launching in the Capital to
safeguard the future of those already here.
The recommendation is one of 14 made in the Thundering Hooves
report, designed to protect the GBP 184 million which the cultural
extravaganzas contribute to the Scottish economy each year.
The report says long-term strategies and significant increases in
investment are needed to keep visitors flocking to festivals in the
Capital. Last year, Edinburgh City Council spent GBP 19.2 million, or
2.8 per cent of its total budget, on cultural events, including the
city's 11 festivals.
