Purchasing Managers Index Signals Expansion

The economy speeded up in October after slowing the previous month, with production growing at its quickest rate in three months, according to a report by the nation's purchasing managers.

The Purchasing Managers Index rose to 56.8 in October from 54.8 in September, remaining below the year's peak of 59.3 in June, the National Association of Purchasing Management said in a report released today.

An index above 50 percent generally indicates the economy is expanding.
