Gay Voters an Unknown Factor in Election;Activists Are Backing Dukakis, but Other Homosexuals Reflect a Wide Range of Views

Stephen Smith, a congressional lobbyist for gay rights issues,
has watched as almost every major gay political organization around
the country has supported Democrat Michael S. Dukakis for president.
But Smith says that doesn't mean unanimity among the nation's
millions of homosexuals.
"What people see is the gay leadership, which is solidly
Democratic," said Smith, legislative counsel for the Human Rights
Campaign Fund, a political action committee that gives money to
