The name at the very heart of British motoring history is that of a German, Gottlieb Daimler.

Daimler died 11 days short of his 65th birthday on March 6, 1900 and only four years after the very first British car - made by the Coventry company bearing his name - rolled off the production line.

Daimler's legacy has lasted to this day and the original Daimler Motor Company was absorbed by Jaguar Cars in 1960.
