Tesco turns down food 'traffic light'

GOVERNMENT-backed plans for an instantly recognisable food
labelling system to warn about high sugar and salt levels were dealt
a severe blow today when the UK's biggest supermarket shunned the
initiative.
Tesco, which originally piloted the "traffic light" labelling
scheme, has ditched the system after it was derided for being too
simplistic. Critics complained that it brands nutritious foods, such
as cheese or nuts, as bad.
Research suggested the "traffic light" labels were popular with
shoppers, who welcomed it as a way of judging which foods are healthy
