City comes out fighting over 4 per cent council tax rise

CITY leaders today defended plans to impose a four per cent rise on council tax for the third straight year - and warned that a similar hike was inevitable next year unless the Scottish Executive intervenes.

Householders face an average annual bill of GBP 1126 from April - compared to GBP 1083 last year - under proposals expected to be rubber-stamped at the City Chambers today.

The above-inflation rise is well over the 2.5 per cent figure which Scotland's local authorities were initially ordered to keep to by First Minister Jack McConnell.
