Japan: The Shaping of Daimyo Culture, 1185-1868," the exhibition
opening today at the East Building of the National Gallery of Art, is
an incredibly ambitious undertaking, an attempt to sum up seven
centuries of a nation's history in a mere 400 objects or so.
It is a splendid exhibition because the objects are splendid.
Even in an age of huge international expositions of art this one
stands out for the variety and quality of the materials in it. This
