FOR THOSE OF US who find the Japanese to be an impressive but puzzling people, enlightenment is at hand. The way to understand a nation's heart is through its art, and more than 450 of Japan's best-loved cultural treasures go on display Sunday at the National Gallery of Art.

There's never been such a large and comprehensive exhibition anywhere before, not even in Japan. It took six years to put together, spans Japan's seven most formative centuries, and encompasses all its major traditional arts, including Noh theater and the hallowed tea ceremony.
