IT is an event so rare that it has not been seen by any living person.

But today - 122 years after it last appeared in the skies - stargazers around the world gathered at observatories and huddled by telescopes to watch a small dark disc creep across the face of the Sun.

The event was one of the rarest of celestial spectacles - a transit of Venus - which began shortly before 6.20am.
