We need a memorial to write home about

ON December 2, 2002, I arrived in Apia, the capital of Western
Samoa. The next day I was to achieve one of my lifetime ambitions -
to visit the grave of Robert Louis Stevenson. Much to the amusement
of the locals, I stepped out of the taxi wearing my kilt and
proceeded to climb Mount Vaea.
It was very humid, and I nearly turned back on several occasions
as the climb is very steep, but I eventually peered through the
bushes at the top of the hill to see his grave overlooking one of the
most spectacular views on the island.
The pathway that I had climbed was carved out overnight after
