Pramoedya Ananta Toer, 81, an Indonesian author and outspoken advocate of democracy who overcame imprisonment and censorship to publish dozens of stories and novels about his country, died April 30 at his home in Jakarta. He had diabetes and heart disease, and he had endured years of abuse while in detention.

Mr. Pramoedya -- jailed under successive regimes, including 14 years under ex-dictator Suharto -- was nominated several times for a Nobel Prize in literature, and his 34 books and essays have been translated into 37 languages.
