Refreshed, Quieter Barry Pacing Himself for the Long Run

Mayor Marion Barry, chewing licorice root and sipping cornsilk tea, was speaking as if he had seen a ghost-his own.

"I'm in the prime of heart attack season because of my age," the 52-year-old mayor said, in a voice somehow quieter than it used to be. "Between 45 and 55 . . . your ticker could be gone."

The newly health-minded mayor, who has lost 20 pounds, said he now walks three to four miles some days and eats fruits, salads and nuts. He said he has cut back on two of his old habits: red meat and cognac. And he meditates.
