WORLD-FAMOUS Lothian conservationist John Muir is vying with grizzly bears, the Golden Gate bridge and Hollywood for the chance to appear on the back of a US coin.

Muir, who championed the idea of national parks, is being considered as an icon to go on 25-cent pieces issued in California, where he made his name with his efforts for the environment.
