Some in Japan See New Intolerance in Reverence for Ailing Emperor

When two college students unfurled a poster criticizing Japanese
Emperor Hirohito near the palace where he lies ailing, police quickly
hustled them away for questioning.
When a group in Shizuoka tried to schedule a meeting to discuss
the role of the emperor, managers refused to make the local public
hall available, saying the meeting could trigger "confusion."
And when a Communist legislator in Tokushima criticized the
emperor for his "barbarous" suppression of human rights before World
War II, the majority in her prefectural assembly promptly voted to
strike her remarks from the record.
