60 years on but fight continues

SIXTY years ago this week saw the publication of the report on
Social Insurance and Allied Services, better known as the Beveridge
Report. The report laid the foundation stones for our present day
welfare state and, to this day, informs the debate about its future.
Born in 1879, William Beveridge was educated at Oxford University.
He became a journalist and then an academic. Beveridge came to
prominence during the Liberal Government of 1906 to 1914 when he was
asked to advise David Lloyd George on old age pensions and national
insurance.
