Icebreaking Fleet Skating Near the Edge, Admiral Says

The decision to divert a Coast Guard icebreaker through the
Northwest Passage has cut to one the number of U.S. icebreakers
available for duty in polar regions, illustrating how dangerously
thin the nation's icebreaking fleet has become, the service's
commandant said yesterday.
"We've got a major problem here," said Adm. Paul A. Yost Jr.,
recounting how the Coast Guard has tried without success for a decade
to secure funding for new icebreakers. At the same time, he said the
service has been forced to decommission its three remaining World War
