Whisky galore as Highland predicts 25 per cent growth in India

HIGHLAND Distillers expects sales of whisky to the Indian market to grow at a compounded annual rate of nearly 25 per cent up to 2004 because of New Delhi's decision to cut duty on liquor imports.

The firm, which makes the world's seventh-largest Scotch brand The Famous Grouse, is one of several whisky makers , including Diageo and Pernod Ricard, which are keen to boost their presence in whisky- loving India.

Dinesh Jain, managing director of Highland's Indian operations, said that Indians currently consumed about 837,000 nine-litre cases of whisky a year.
