As many of the city's ancient incorporations face extinction their historical contribution is set to be recognised

Edinburgh's trade guilds played a key role in the city's development. Miranda Fettes finds some have survived better than others

THEY were all-powerful organisations, founded to protect their members to the bitter end while at the same time wielding immense influence and authority.

And if they so desired, they could make life rather unpleasant for anyone who was not one of them.

They may sound like old-fashioned closed shop trade unions, not unlike the kind of organisation ...
