A group of stockholders in Washington Bancorp led by prominent
attorney Robert B. Washington Jr. yesterday launched a surprise coup
attempt to oust Luther H. Hodges Jr. as chairman of the company,
which owns the National Bank of Washington.
While Hodges was en route to a bankers' convention in Hawaii,
Washington and two other board members with large stakes in the bank
notified the Securities and Exchange Commission of their intent to
try to get rid of him.
Through a spokesman, Hodges said he has "absolutely no intention
of resigning," apparently signaling a fight for control of the $1.8 ...
