Gorbachev Evokes Image of Czar;Soviet Leader, Alexander II Both Stirred E. Europe's Imagination

When Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev made his long-awaited visit
to Poland in July, he said something that could have come straight
out of the mouth of one of his czarist predecessors: "You must not
have illusions, because illusions are dangerous."
Whatever Gorbachev's intentions, the phrase had the effect of
reminding Poles that Russian domination of their country goes back a
long way and is likely to continue, whatever the political climate
inside the Soviet Union. Virtually the same point was made in the
middle of the last century by the reformist Czar Alexander II during
a triumphant ...
