Bobby Ross walked into his office, deposited his peanut butter sandwich on his desk and pointed to a plaque on the wall. He was given it almost two years ago, when, as coach of the Maryland football team, he was made an honorary member of the university's alumni association.

"I'm very proud of that," Ross said today, his eyes lighting up.
