Festus, The Traverse ****
A TINGLE of anticipation rippled around the capacity audience at
the Traverse last night, waiting for the first of two performances of
a unique production.
Such expectation was well rewarded as the bizarre mix of musical
styles and forms was performed by a company of actors, singers and
musicians whose abilities varied widely.
In Festus, opera rubs shoulders with folk music; a classical
chamber orchestra performs with ancient ethnic percussion instruments
and song and speech echo each other as the story climbs from one
inspired moment of poetry to another of total ...
