Unions sign up to 'historic' concordat

SCOTLAND'S trade union leaders today signed a concordat with the Scottish Executive which they hope to use to cut private sector involvement in public services.

STUC president David Bleiman and First Minister Jack McConnell put their names to the "historic" memorandum of understanding on the opening day of the trade unions' annual congress in Perth.

STUC general secretary, Bill Speirs, said the agreement would be judged a success if it led to a reduction in the use of private finance deals in the public sector.
