Glaxo gives up on antibiotic after fears of side effects

DRUGS giant GlaxoSmithKline has thrown in the towel on a once-
promising antibiotic after the United States' Food and Drug
Administration expressed concerns about possible side effects from
the drug, which is designed to treat respiratory infections.
The group said it was handing back rights to the drug, called
Factive, to South Korea's LG Chem Investment.
The decision to abandon the drug is the latest setback for
Europe's biggest pharmaceutical group, which has suffered a series of
product disappointments in the past two years that have left a
growing gap in its late-stage pipeline.
