GYROPLANE PILOT IN CRITICAL CONDITION

The man who was piloting the gyroplane that crashed in Blacksburg on Saturday is a man of many interests, a relative said Sunday evening.

Along with piloting gyroplanes, Ranson Pelt Jr. also participates in amateur radio.

"He is a nice guy; he has a lot of different interests," said his mother-in-law, who declined to give her name. "He is very, very friendly."

Pelt, she added, works in information technology at Virginia Tech.

A female passenger died in the blaze that erupted when the two- seat aircraft dropped to the ground.
