Nancy Hale, Prize-Winning Author, Dies

Nancy Hale, 80, a prize-winning author who published 19 volumes
of fiction, biography and memoirs as well as numerous short stories
that first appeared in The New Yorker and other periodicals, died
Sept. 24 at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. She had a
stroke.
Miss Hale was born in Massachusetts and had lived in
Charlottesville since her marriage in 1942 to Fredson T. Bowers, a
bibliographer and former chairman of the English department at the
University of Virginia. As a young woman she was a magazine editor
