TRACING THE EARLY SETTLERS IN FRANKLIN COUNTY

In 1671, Thomas Batts and Robert Fallam led the first European
expedition to what is now known as Franklin County. The expedition
was commissioned by Abraham Wood, a wealthy planter and trader, for
the purpose of "finding out the ebbing and flowing of the waters on
the other side of the mountains in order to accomplish the discovery
of the South Sea."
The party left Fort Henry (near Richmond) on horseback Sept. 1,
1671. The explorers went as far the western slopes of the
Appalachian Mountains and to the southern tip of West Virginia.
