Military Rule Asked In Lebanon; Moslem Officers Balk At Bid by Gemayel

Lebanese President Amin Gemayel, in a surprise move minutes
before his term expired at midnight last night, appointed a six-man
military government to steer the country out of an unprecedented
constitutional crisis caused by the failure of parliament to agree on
a successor.
But the refusal of three Moslem officers to join the military
government-the first in Lebanon's history-revived fears of a
partition of the country along religious lines that would leave it
even more vulnerable to renewed civil war and political manipulation
by outside powers.
