St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville is 175 years old this week.

When the church was established in 1813, Rockville was a farming center, and the Rockville Pike, which runs in front of the church, bustled with produce wagons.

Now, cars full of commuters crowd the busy highway, and St. Mary's offers a view of Metro tracks and the high-rise office towers of the county seat.

The first members of St. Mary's were Irish laborers who dug the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and families who farmed the Rockville area. Now the church's 2,000 households include so many newcomers to the United States that ...
