Looking for a birding hot spot? You can't do better in warbler season than Warbler Road.

This winding dirt road, which descends from Apple Orchard Mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway down to the James River outside of Arcadia, acquired the moniker sometime back in the '70s.

That was when an ice storm "really opened things up about halfway up the mountain," according to veteran birder Barry Kinzie, creating habitat for blue-winged and golden-winged warblers and their hybrid offspring, the Brewster's warbler.
