Hard-Line Armed Forces Chief Seizes Power in Burma Coup; Defiant Protesters Take to Rangoon's Streets

Burma's armed forces commander seized power in a coup today,
pledging to "restore law and order and peace and tranquility"
following more than a month of antigovernment "people power" protests
that have paralyzed the country and brought the authoritarian
government to the brink of collapse.
The new government, which ousted an appointed civilian president
for the fourth change of administration in Burma in two months,
immediately asserted itself with a show of force as thousands of
residents took to the streets to protest the coup.
