When the Nikolais Dance Theatre arrives at the Terrace Theater
Tuesday night for a week's engagement, it will mark its first
Washington performances in 11 years, as well as the company's Kennedy
Center debut.
Except, that is, for its appearance at the Opera House last
December as part of the Kennedy Center Honors program, when one of
the awardees was troupe founder-director Alwin Nikolais, better known
to dance devotees as "Nik."
In answer to the phone query "How are you?," Nik replied from
his New York studio a few days ago, "I'm fine." He'd weathered some
