First Loss For Navy: Temple, 12-7; Smaller Midshipmen Shut Out Until Late

Navy didn't shrink before its first NCAA Division I-A opponent
this season, but the Midshipmen couldn't win their third straight
game either, falling, 12-7, to Temple.
Navy's bid to defeat a Division I-A foe for the first time since
1986 and go 3-0 for the first time since 1979 fell short for various
reasons. The biggest was a 35-yard Temple touchdown pass, Tony Lerro
to Mike Palys, with 8:31 to play.
The score put the Owls ahead by 12-0, enough cushion for the
visitors (1-2) to withstand a one-yard touchdown plunge by Navy
quarterback Gary McIntosh with 2:33 to go.
