U.S. Charges Iraq Used Poison Gas on Kurds; Shultz Warns Baghdad of Effect on Ties

Secretary of State George P. Shultz bluntly accused Iraq yesterday of "unjustifiable and abhorrent" use of poison gas against its Kurdish minority, and told a senior Iraqi official that a continuation of gas attacks would affect overall U.S.-Iraqi relations.

Shultz's strongly worded declaration, in a 50-minute meeting with Iraqi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Saddoun Hammadi, followed by several hours the announcement that the United States has become "convinced" that Iraq has used chemical weapons against the Kurds.
