The time and the place are recorded. It was April 22, 1915, Ypres, France, where German and French troops faced each other across the trenches. What happened that day and in that place was so terrible that even by the standards of warfare, the world was shocked. In a single day, 15,000 men fell victim to German poison gas-10,000 wounded, 5,000 killed. Within a decade, a horrified community of nations had outlawed chemical warfare.
