Soviet Space Capsule Makes Safe Landing; Malfunctions Had Stalled Craft in Orbit

A Soviet space capsule carrying Afghanistan's first cosmonaut and a Soviet crewmate glided safely to earth in Soviet Central Asia early today following a day-long space drama in which the craft appeared to be stalled in orbit with oxygen sufficient to sustain the two men for only 48 hours.

Soviet radio announced that the cosmonauts landed at 4:50 a.m. Moscow time (8:50 p.m. Tuesday EDT), and loud applause from Soviet ground controllers could be heard in the broadcast background. "The long-awaited moment is here," the radio report said. "They have been transferred into Russian hands."
