The 20th century may be a golden age of music, but it has also
produced some of the most unpleasant compositions ever inflicted on
human ears.
I don't mean simply heavy metal, disco and new age
music-commercial forms that corporate greed and high-level
technology have sprayed across our lives like defoliants in Vietnam.
I mean music of classical aspirations, music that seeks a place in
the lineage of Bach and Mozart.
We have had music that cultivates violence for its own sake,
music composed by mathematical formulas, music so void and formless
that it seems (and sometimes is) untouched by ...
