The meter reader is headed for extinction. New technologies being adopted by utilities, including Appalachian Power and the Western Virginia Water Authority, are slowly but surely making the street- walking, yard-visiting icon obsolete.

America sidewalks were long teeming with vendors making their rounds. The ice man cameth, as did the milkman, postman, grocery man, Avon lady and Fuller Brush man, along, of course, with the meter readers.
