`Helping Hand' for Sale; Corcoran Work Among 28 to Be Auctioned

"We need `The Helping Hand,' " said Michael Monroe, curator in charge of the Renwick Gallery, and he wasn't altogether punning.

But after hanging in the Renwickoff and on for more than 100 years, "The Helping Hand" is going for good. Emile Renouf's famous sentimental painting of an old fisherman at the oar of a boat with a small girl will be sold at Sotheby's in New York Oct. 27.

The oil, which belongs to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, has been on loan to the Renwick, a department of the Smithsonian Institution, since before the Renwick opened in January 1972.
