His family's downtown department store played host to Santa Claus every Christmas for decades.

The Roanoke Christmas parade traditionally ended at N.W. Pugh's Department Store on West Campbell Avenue, where Robert Beverly Pugh was vice president and treasurer.

Children received circle-shaped pins, tied with a ribbon and a jingle bell, that stated "Meet me at Pugh's."

Santa would get off a float and head to the store's fourth-floor toy department. That's where he listened to children's Christmas gift requests. He'd later read their letters to Santa on WDBJ radio.
