A wall of riot policemen blocked militant South Korean students
from marching to the border today for banned reunification talks with
their North Korean counterparts and then broke up a sit-down protest
with tear gas and beatings.
The planned march, scheduled on the 43rd anniversary of Korea's
liberation from Japanese colonialism, was aimed at escorting student
leaders to the village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone for
talks on the reunification of the peninsula, which was divided at the
end of World War II.
