APPALACHIAN TRAIL CONSERVANCY RECEIVES AN OVERHAUL

Laura Belleville stood on a cracking asphalt ledge that used to be the main road over Catawba Mountain.

The Appalachian Trail was on the mountain's spine behind her. Bees and butterflies bustled like commuter traffic among the milkweed a few feet in front of her. But Belleville was focused on the Catawba Valley below -- what she considers the most threatened Appalachian trail view between Shenandoah National Park and North Carolina.

Belleville, 38, is the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's new regional director. Based in Blacksburg, Belleville's region stretches from Waynesboro to Damascus.
