Russian-born prima ballerina Natalia Makarova made history this
weekend when she danced with the Kirov Ballet in London, 18 years
after she defected while on tour with the company. It marked the
first time a Soviet dancer who has defected was permitted to perform
with her or his former company. Last year, another Kirov defector,
Rudolf Nureyev, was allowed to visit the Soviet Union.
