B. Francis Saul II might have a dozen or more reasons for wanting to take the B.F. Saul Real Estate Investment Trust private, but the underlying motive is the same one that's guided him since he took over the family financial empire: Saul wants sole control of all his businesses and freedom from public scrutiny.

With few exceptions, Saul has avoided situations in which he would have to share decisions, deals, assets and profits with outsiders. Only the candy kings, the Mars brothers of Mars Inc. of McLean, have managed to keep a tighter seal on information about their business.
