Lesbos Declares Dukakis a Winner; Greek Isle Loves the Candidate, Who Visited Once 12 Years Ago

Michael Dukakis may still have a little way to go before becoming
the president of the United States, but here in this tiny village on
the Greek island of Lesbos, off the Turkish coast, he might just as
well have been elected already.
Pelopi, the birthplace of Dukakis' father, Panos, has elevated
the Democratic Party candidate to the status of its most important
local celebrity since native son Kostas Politis made something of a
name for himself as a writer in the 19th century.
