If Carter Warley needed some kind of stirring motivational tool to help him save his job, Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer was quick to deliver.

How about a giant sledgehammer, son?

Pulling no punches a day before Tech opened preseason practice Sunday, Beamer declared an open race for Warley's starting place- kicker's post.

"Carter Warley had a very good spring," Beamer said. "But he needs to have a better field-goal percentage than he did last fall. He knows that."
