Psychologist Philip Ash knew he was good at what he did.

That confidence was shared by lawyers who called him as an expert witness in front of the U.S. Supreme Court more than 30 years ago. His testimony helped outlaw employment tests that discriminated against blacks. It was one of many highlights in a career in psychology that lasted for about half a century.

Ash, of Blacksburg, died Saturday at Montgomery Regional Hospital from pneumonia. He was 85.

"He simply felt things were unfair," his wife, Judith Cates, said in explaining her husband's testimony in Griggs vs. Duke Power Co. in 1970.
